IRS standard mileage rate: 2025, 2026 and what comes next

The IRS changed the business standard mileage rate in the middle of 2026, so a trip is not priced the same in March and in September. Here are the rates by date, as I read them on irs.gov.

Rates read from the IRS pages on 2 November 2026 · Last updated 7 November 2026

Business use, per mile

The rate depends on the date of the trip, not on the date you file. A trip on 20 June 2026 is at 72.5 cents and one on 2 July 2026 is at 76 cents.

Medical and moving, per mile

Charity, per mile

14 cents, set by law, in 2025 and 2026.

The 2027 rate

The IRS usually announces the next year's rates late in December. I have not read a 2027 announcement yet, so there is no 2027 figure here. I update this page the day I have read it on irs.gov.

Keeping the log that goes with the rate

A rate is only half of a claim, the other half is a log of each trip with its date and distance. Trajan, the iPhone app I built, records a trip with one tap, sorts it as business or personal with another, and prices each trip at the rate in force on its day. It is free to record, and the PDF or CSV report for a year is the paid part. No account, the trips stay on the iPhone.
